Summary

The Youtuber from the channel “Design Prototype Test” recently published a video about the best filament spool holder in the world, that he made. I was sorry to see that I could not test it out because he hid his design behind a patreon paywall although he was inspired by a lot of our designs which we shared freely and openly in the hope that all people in our community would do so, too.

I was so disappointed (also because I could not see any relevant improvment or ingenuity) that I designed a new spool holder based on my famous UNIVERSAL FILAMENT SPOOL HOLDER.

This Gen 2 Spoolholder is now also compatible to spools with large inner diameters like 75mm and above. But the main new feature is the quick-lock nut that allows you to easily remove the nut from the thread with a simple twist of the nut back plate.

All parts can be printed without support. I have tested my spool design in PLA and PETG material. Like always you can also find the step file for the complete assembly in the attachments if you like to remix it, redesign it or if you need it to design a 3D printer specific mount for it.

Of course the Gen 2 spool holder is compatible with the old generation. So if you are lazy like me, you can only print the new quick-lock nut and use it on the old spool holder.

What you need is:

  • M8 threaded rod (length depends on the spool holder mount that you want to use, mine >is - 170mm long)
  • 2-3x M8 Nuts
  • 2x Skateboard ball bearing 608ZZ (I bought them cheap from aliexpress as a flanged >bearing which looks even better)
    8mm (core)
    22mm (outer diameter)
    7mm (width)
For the quick-lock nut you need:
    -3x M3x8 ISO 10642/DIN 7991 Countersunk Head Screw
    -3x M3x6 ISO 4762/DIN 912 Cylinder Head Screw

You can also find a lot of great remixes and mounts/redesings for all kind of printers here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2070272/remixes

If you like my new design I would really apreciate a good review. And if you like you can also donate a few bucks which will be converted into inspiration enhancing German beer.
