Instructions
Object made for laser cutting. Designed for material that is 1/8" thick.
I used MDF board and colored the pieces with colored pencil (Prismacolor) and black permanent ink. The coasters were then coated with spray on clear enamel as a protective layer to waterproof it. If you want add a soft fabric to the bottom of each coaster, there is enough height to the box to allow for ~1 mm thick piece of fabric.
If you decide to use ink to color yours and then coat with spray enamel, you have to do a few light layers of enamel before adding a heavier application--otherwise the spray enamel will dissolve the ink and make it bleed. With MDF the enamel tends to absorb into the wood a little so after about 3 or 4 lightly applied layers, the surface should be sealed of enough to add heavier applications for a glossier finish.
This is kinda optional but before applying the enamel I put a couple layers of workable fixatif on the coasters to help protect the ink and also to seal off the wood surface a bit so the enamel wouldn't absorb in as much (the clear enamel will darken the MDF wood a bit, but the fixatif does not).
