YET ANOTHER SPOOL DRAWER DESIGN

INTRO

There are plenty of spool drawer designs out there, but they often require specific spools/hardware that you may not have or want to buy. That was certainly my problem with these, so I set out to design a fully parametric spool drawer, with presets for 3 common spool sizes.

FEATURES:

  • Fully parametric/customisable in the Fusion 360 files. This should allow this design to work for ANY spool, and with ANY screws/bolts/pins for the hinge! - You could even use a piece of filament for the hinge, but I'm not sure how effective that would be.
  • Optional files for a base utilising a bearing for a smooth spinning motion, or more simply a base that slots into the spool.
  • Support for brass threaded inserts in the Fusion 360, parametric files.

STL BREAKDOWN:

I have identified the spools as A, B and C. Between the images and provided you should be able to identify your own spools if a preset has been made.

  • "Preset X - Drawer.stl" is ESSENTIAL and is what it sounds like. Preset drawers use 3mm diameter holes, so should be ideal for M3 bolts
  • "Preset X - Drill Template.pdf" is an A4 printable template to help you drill holes into your spool correctly.
  • "Preset X - Base.stl" is an OPTIONAL file for a base. This is just to prop the spool up on a pedestal to look pretty.
  • "Preset X - Bearing Base.stl" is an OPTIONAL file for a base that uses a standard 608 skateboard bearing.
  • "Preset X - Bearing Base Joint.stl" is required if using "Bearing Base".

CUSTOMISING:

Every file is referenced back to "Parametric Spool". Any changes made to Parametric Spool and then saved, will affect the dimensions of all other parts.

To customise a part, go up to "Modify" and "Change Parameters". Here you will see a list of parameters with mostly self-explanatory names. If you're not sure what a parameter does, change it and look at the model.

I encourage you to upload a remix with your customised version of the design as it may help someone else.

FINALLY:

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. I am more than happy to help and will answer as soon as possible.

Please post a make as I love to see my designs out in the wild!

I am open to feedback/suggestions. As of 08/05/2020 I have not personally tested the presets as my print queue is stacked, however they are built from previous prototypes. Testers are much appreciated.

If you like this design, please consider donating through the blue "Tip Designer" button on the right. The money will go towards filament and allow me to continue designing and printing awesome things!
