I searched Thingiverse and Cults3D for a travel salt and pepper shaker. While there were lots of great results, I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. I wanted something that would allow me to fill the container easily (without the use of a funnel if I'm careful) and would stack together so I don't lose either of the tiny shaker pieces.
This model solves both problems by utilizing a "mid connection" piece that acts both as a cap and a way to connect the salt and the pepper shakers together. On either end there are 5 holes to let you generously distribute your favorite spices directly onto your food.
If you want to use both shakers simultaneously, you can just cover the holes on the opposite end with a fingertip, or place the cap on it for extra spill-proofing. Setting the shaker on its side is generally enough to keep it from spilling out and the knurled sections of the caps tend to keep it from rolling too far.
If there's enough interest, I'll consider adding an alternative model that has flatter sides and has an additional "mid connection" cap that would allow for separating the shakers and still allow them to be connected end-to-end. For now, the "blank end cap" can be used in place of the mid connection if you want to keep them separate. It also allows you to easily customize and put your own letter/word on it for labeling other seasonings such as Creole or chili powder, etc.
DISCLAIMER: I am aware that PLA is typically not food-safe. I don't recommend using it for foods that contain any amount of moisture or would need to be washed repeatedly. That being said, I feel that for dry seasonings it is safe enough for me to use in this way. Please feel free to do your own research and make your own decision, though.
- EDIT -
I included a new option for the salt and pepper shakers that includes larger-diameter shaker holes. I found in using my original printed design that the holes didn't allow for the kind of seasoning dispersal that I prefer (lots of it!), so I increased the hole diameter from 2mm for each hole to 2.75mm. This should allow for more or larger grains to exit the shaker while in use. I recommend using these ones, but I will leave the originals up as well.
Also, Thingiverse user @autocannibal suggested that I include a cap option that includes a keyring. I thought it was a great idea, so I made an additional end cap option that includes a robust loop with a 3.5mm diameter hole to which your favorite type of key ring or hook can be attached. I hope you like the new addition, and thanks again to @autocannibal for the idea!
