Summary

Hey guys! The day has finally arrived. Here is my design for a full roll adapter for the Nikon coolscan 5000 (and 4000 I believe). This includes the front and back spool needed, along with the pins needed to glue the two halves together. I have been working on this on and off for a few years and I think it's finally at a spot where I feel comfortable releasing it to the public.

You first have to modify the SA-21 to the SA-30. There are many articles out there going over this. Here is one that I personally used: https://www.stockholmviews.com/coolscan-rollfeeder-mod.html

A few notes for printing:

  • Make sure to print 2 pins for the front spool and 2 pins for the back (4 total).
  • Sand the mating surface between the top and bottom halves for the front and back with 220 sandpaper (It doesn't need to be perfect, just a light sand will do).
  • Sand the outside of the front side covers so they fit into the front spool without much force. Not much sanding should be required.
  • Blow out all of the parts with compressed air after sanding.
  • Test fit the pins into the spools before gluing, sand pins if necessary. Glue pins in place, and glue area around pins when connecting the two halves. No need to glue all the way around the part.
  • Use a heat gun, or hair dryer, to heat up and bend the front spool connecting legs inwards a little bit to give it a spring effect when attached to the scanner. Do not overheat, not much heat is necessary to bend.
