I had an idea to add lights to the inside of the pirate ship I am working on but wanted them to be separate from the ship itself so I modified this barrel and crate to fit one of those LED earrings. I cut off the top of the earring and soldered on a 3mm flicker LED. The LED itself serves as the glass of the lantern. I used a bit of sandpaper and scuffed up the plastic on the LED to make it look like old glass and to help diffuse the light.

To turn on simply press down on the top of the lantern. To turn off just pull the lantern up off the crate/barrel a tiny bit. You could put this lantern on anything like a dresser, table, desk, etc. The object would need to be about 16.5-17mm tall. It could also work on taller objects with some modifications to the design. The earring could drop into a pocket from the top but you would have to modify the base of the lantern to cover up the larger hole. Alternatively, you could make a riser to put under the earring and still put the larger part in from the bottom and have the smaller hole on the top.

The lanterns were printed on my Elegoo Mars at .02mm layer resolution and the barrel and crate were printed at .05mm layer resolution. You could probably print the barrel and crate on an FDM printer but the lantern would most likely need an SLA printer.

To modify the LED earing just use some wire cutters and snip the legs off the earring and then continue to trim around the earing base to make it smaller. There is a center post that comes up through the center of the tiny circuit board. Leave that in place. The center post is the negative contact. The outer housing of the earring is the positive contact. So then after you have the earring base trimmed down to size (3mm) just solder the negative lead of the flicker LED to the center post and the positive lead on the flicker led to the earring base. You can use the flexible sanding disc on a dremel to do additional trimming of the LED base if needed.
