Summary

An entire table's worth of wargaming terrain in a single easy to transport package?

This is an old project of mine from about a decade ago where I wanted to see if I could design an easily transportable table’s worth of terrain for Infinity for my university gaming society.

The idea was that a large central building would hold all the smaller buildings and scatter terrain pieces inside it like a Matryoshka doll. The whole thing could then be carried to a table and setup easily before being taken down and packed away for storage.

One of the most important factors in the design was that it needed to be very strong to stand up to the repeated assembly and disassembly each week as well as the abuse from the society's wargamers. Hence the large number of tabs for all joints which gives maximum surface area for glue and produces very strong structures. I had a 3 year old stand on the full assembly cut from birch ply to see if it would survive and it did.

I had access to a FabLab at the time of manufacture which had an Epilog laser cutter capable of color quantization cutting and could hold 300x600x3 mm sheets of MDF and birch plywood. The plans are optimized for fast cutting to minimize laser time and the small tabs in the two-colour plans are to allow sheets to be cut and lifted out quickly so that all parts stay together.

I gave away the plans for free through a public Dropbox link on the old Infinity Forums and feedback from the community of the initial Mk1 design led to this Mk2 design being released a while later.

I was in the final stages of a Mk3 design which used layered walls for detail and was setup so that I could alter the thickness of the materials using parameter modeling when I lost access to my design software and the FabLab closed down. If I can ever get Inventor 2011 working again I might be able to resurrect the plans but who knows.

Because there are so many files and Thingiverse does not allow for container folders in their downloads I’m instead posting a link to the Dropbox Folder that the plans can be downloaded from.
