For the common household trash or recycling cans, the top rim can be used to hand them up. Four our household, it saved us space on the floor, made it easier to walk past our vehicles, and we could get our recyclables in the cans with a shorter walk and reach.
You need to position the screws very carefully, since the fitment is very close for these brackets to the screws. The brackets are fairly thick to be strong. Only the minimal space was made for the rim of the can to fit in, and to hold well.
