Summary

The flight stand is designed so you can change the altitude of the miniatures by 5' at a time. Each connector piece is 1" long, so as you add them or remove them, you're staying in keeping with the rest of the board (assuming 1" grids).

The top and bottom of the stand work with the connectors and you just plug one in on each end of the column of connectors.

I've had these up to 10 connectors high and they stayed stable. (For tall poles, I recommend you butterfly clip or bluetack the miniatures to the top so you don't hate yourself if you bump one of the poles.)

Each top and base is a grid of four 1" squares so that you can put multiple miniatures in the air for a battle or because they are flying in close formation, and also so you can put miniatures directly below the flying creatures.

I've tested this in many games and it works solidly. I hope you enjoy it!
