Summary

This electronics components box was my 8 year old son David's first CAD project (using FreeCAD). The dividers and box are wood (3mm) and the lid is clear yellow 3mm cast acrylic (6"x11" sheet).

Small brass hinges are also used. These are from Rockler (http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=247&site=ROCKLER&filter=28712). The hinges are bolted on with 8 4-40 brass 1/4 bolts and nuts.

The laser cutting took 7 and a half minutes.
The brass fasteners were $3.20
The pair of hinges were $3.49
Materials are less than $10

That makes it roughly $30 to build. It is a lot more expensive than a mass produced plastic box, but much more fun to build and look at afterwards.

Status update:

We modified the models for another iteration to speed it up and updated the lid to be flush on the sides and only a 3mm overhang in the front. Also, lowered the hing holes half a millimeter to make the lid more flush. Once we cut it, I will update the models and pics.

A remix we are working on:

Get rid of hinge and bolts by designing a mechanism we can laser cut. This would lower the cost by $6.69. This change and the earlier model clean up should get the cost down to about $20
