If there's something we can all agree on, it's that the perfect 3D printer filament holder has yet to be invented. Here is my contribution, and it works well for me. I keep it on the floor directly underneath my printer's intake tube so it is out of the way. It replaces a PVC pipe clamped to the shelf, so it's definitely an upgrade. Bonus, I get my clamp back!
Main box is lasercut out of 1/8" (3mm) plywood and assembled with wood glue. I've made quite a few boxes like this out of thin ply with the little tabs and the best tool to apply the glue is a syringe with a 1.5mm nozzle (get it at a hobby store). You can put the glue right where it belongs and you don't have much to wipe up afterwards. The result is a nice solid box with no wiggle in it.
Filament reel sits on a .85" (21mm) PVC pipe. The curve cut on top of the box cradles the PVC pipe, so you don't need to worry about the reel rolling out. The reel sits very loosely on the pipe, so it has just the right about of friction to keep from unspooling and not too much so it binds up the printer.
