The version 2 of this frame is available here (with walksnail & DJI O3 support)

This design won't be updated here anymore. I'm slowly moving all my designs on Printables, go here please : https://www.printables.com/model/202447-wu-tank-max-5-and-6-inch-freestyle-frame

Updates :

  • 05/2022 : added the simple session mount + TwistLock powerlead holder for top plate
  • 04/2022 : bumped body plates version to v2, i made some slight adjustments after spending a few months with the frame. The most significative ones are : made some weight gains, reinforced the bottom plate, adjusted the top plate strap passings.
  • 03/2022 : added 6" deadcat arms (front and rear)
  • 02/2022 : added rear and top plates that fit a DJI AIR UNIT or an HDZERO Freestyle VTX. Check for the AIRUNIT in the file name. Those are the only specific parts to cut this version, the rest is common. Please notice also that the center-rear standoffs are mounted on top of the arm screws so no pressnuts needed here on the long version. Optionally one can use M3 nylock nuts + 15mm M3 standoffs here.
  • 01/2022 : new arm guard (v1-2) that should fit better and allow access to bell screw
  • 11/2021 : a set of accessories for the Wu Tank Max made by RookieFPV, go check those here : https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5139468
  • 11/2021 : added some gopro mounts (session5 and hotshoe mount), crsf front holder. The hand screw for the hotshoe mount is intended for a M5 socket head screw in order to replace the gopro standard but super long screw.
  • 11/2021 : added arm guards, mount for caddx cherry antenna, cam plates bumpers

The Wu Tank Max comes out many challenges : would the excellent Wu Tank frame scale up to a normal 5" freestyle frame ? Can i finally design a frame with cam plates that doesn't look like crap to me ?

For most of the questions the answer is quite yes and the final result is quite awesome so far. The frame is easy to build and files really well on stock tune.

vibration management : the frame is clean in that regard (take a look at the gyro_scaled graphs provided), the design principles and layouts are quite good in that regard and are coming from previous designs such as the Wu Tank.

Note that there are now 2 versions of the body. The normal one fitting a vista or 20x20 VTX at the rear and the "AIRUNIT" one that fits the DJI airunit but also the HDZERO Freestyle or any 30x30 mountable VTX. For this version you just need the specific rear and top plates that have AIRUNIT in the name. All the other parts are common (arms, front plate, cam plates).

Check also the assembly pictures and list of hardware, there are some differences regarding the center rear standoffs assembly (no pressnuts, longer screws).

Buy that frame (for cutting options check below)

I worked with Goa FPV on this design and he had quite a precise idea on how a freestyle frame should be so he deserves a lot of credits for all the reinforcements made on that one.

NB : the design files provided are amended after receiving and testing the 1st prototype. that's why they're slightly different from the pictures you can see above.

here are the specs :

  • 5" (5.5 actually) or 6" WideX arm options
  • HD capable with cam plates
  • 6mm thick arms (for strength and vibration management)
  • reinforced front (2.5mm front and cam plates)
  • supports 16x16 M3 motors (from 22xx to 25xx at least)
  • front mount supports 20x20 (M3), 25.5x25.5 (M2) and 30.5x30.5 (M3) patterns (basically should fit any stack or AIO you can come with)
  • electronics mounts are separated from arms or frame assembly screws
  • rear 20x20 mount for DJI Vista / VTX (normal/vista version)
  • rear 20x20 and 30x30 for AIRUNIT, HDZERO Freestyle (AIRUNIT REAR + TOP PLATES NEEDED)

so far, once assembled the 5" frame (normal) is ~124g, the 6" is ~126g (estimated carbon weight + weighted mounting hardware i used).

Mounting hardware (normal version)

Here's the list of mounting hardware needed to assemble the frame :

  • 8 x M3 pressnuts (on the rear plate for arms assembly)
  • 4 x M2 BetaFPV Clamping nuts (on the rear 20x20 mount to easily install the Vista/VTX, https://betafpv.com/products/m2-clamping-nuts)
  • 8 x M3 12mm steel screws (arms attach)
  • 10 x M3 6mm steel screws (for the 20mm standoffs, rear and front)
  • 4x M3 10mm steel screws (gopro mount and front standoffs, top)
  • 4x M3 8mm steel screws (front standoffs, bottom)
  • 5 x 20mm M3 standoffs (4 at the rear, 1 in the front on the cam plates)
  • 4 x 28mm M3 standoffs (at the front)
  • 16 x M3 8mm steel screws (for the motors)

Mounting hardware (AIRUNIT version)

Here's the list of mounting hardware needed to assemble the frame :

  • 6 x M3 pressnuts (on the rear plate for arms assembly)
  • 6 x M3 12mm steel screws (arms attach through pressnuts)
  • 2 x M3 16mm steel screws (rear arm attach through standoffs)
  • 10 x M3 6mm steel screws (for the 20mm standoffs, rear and front on top)
  • 4x M3 10mm steel screws (gopro mount and front standoffs, top)
  • 4x M3 8mm steel screws (front standoffs, bottom)
  • 5 x 20mm M3 standoffs (4 at the rear, 1 in the front on the cam plates)
  • 4 x 28mm M3 standoffs (at the front)
  • 16 x M3 8mm steel screws (for the motors)

getting the frame cut

My recommended places are www.cncmadness.com (CA/US/Worldwide) and www.carbon-posten.de (EU). Great quality cuts and fair pricing/delivery time.

you need to send the provided DXF files with the following instructions :

  • 4x arms (choose the 5in or 6in file according to your needs) : 6mm carbon fiber
  • 1x front plate : 2.5mm carbon fiber
  • 2x cam plates : 2.5mm carbon fiber
  • 1x rear plate : 2mm carbon fiber (or AIRUNIT version for airunit/hdzero)
  • 1x top plate : 2mm carbon fiber (or AIRUNIT version for airunit/hdzero)

You can optionally ask for countersunk holes on the rear of the top plate and have your screws sitting flush.

Feel free to ask me for directions and help.

Installing the VTX (Vista or whatever 20x20 VTX)

The rear 20x20 mount is intended to be used with M2 pressnuts that go under the rear plate. So you just have to screw your VTX using M2 screws coming from the top. In the provided files you'll find some VTX washers that are 2.2mm tall and will allow you to give some clearance for air and wires under the VTX. I recommend M2 16-18mm screws for a DJI Vista.

Check the pictures provided, you'll get the idea quite easily.

My build

on the test rig i used the following gear :

  • FPVCycle 25mm 1880 Kv motors (do you a treat and get some of those amazing motors)
  • Gemfan 5226 props
  • AIKON mini stack (F7 fc)
  • DJI Vista
  • TBS Crossfire RX
  • Ovonic 1000 mAh 6S and Tattu 1400 mAh 6S lipos
  • GoPro Session 5
