The spring pins are not tapered, so you can use various sizes of springs. You can possibly use a click-type pen spring. Spring steel is a bit too hard for cutters, you may have to Dremel one in half. You have to use gravity and the holes in the receiver, to guide the springs when assembling this.
I found the springs I used in an assortment from Micro Center (SKU: 381913, Enkay Products 101 Piece Spring Assortment) but their assortment may vary.
