This is a demonstration of living hinges (gatscharnieren in Dutch) in practice. Wim van der Hoek designed this to precisely control a slit to use with a laser interferometer. I copied the design and made 2 changes. One is that it is suitable for 3D printing, although it can be perfectly made out of steel as the part is intended to be made of. The other change is that it workts with a clothespin spring.
It always takes me a long time to wrap my head around such mechanisms by looking at a picture. To have them as physical objects really helps me understand it better. By making the desing myself I appreciate the engineering behind it even more.
