Update - version 3 can be found here which has an adjustable holder(iphone 3 to 6 Plus will fit easily) and is much thicker:

I came up with this. This version allows cables of any size to be wrapped around the back of the holder. Also you can mount the holder in three different positions - left, right and top. Should work with most smartphones and cases. Enjoy!
