We have a portable generator in case the power goes out for an extended period, like a rolling blackout. Running a cord in through a door, leaves the door open a crack and it is unsecured. Same thing with the cord through a window. So I decided I needed a passage through the wall which would accommodate two 12 Ga, 20 Amp extension cords. One for the refrigerator and another for whatever. I also wanted these access holes to be firmly sealable to keep out creepy crawlers like we have in Texas. Don't needy more scorpions or geckos in the house.
I looked online and they do make wall pass throughs for this use that will accommodate the thickness of my walls (5 ½"), but they were in excess of $25 and had no way of closing them off when not in use, unless you stuffed a rag into the opening. Not too appealing and critters can chew through rags.
