This is an adapter and instructions for replacing the stock VW Eurovan rear hatch emblem with an illuminated version. The 3d printed adapter parts are designed to accommodate the light-up emblems from this company: https://www.carledlogo.com/car-logo-badge/led-vw-emblem/
Read these instructions and carefully examine photos to understand how it goes together. By following this approach, the emblem is illuminated by the license plate circuits. When the license plate lights are on, the emblem is on. For my 2001 US VW Eurovan, this means the emblem is illuminated when the headlights are turned on.
The emblems are available in 3 color choices and require 12v power. I used red for the rear. The adapter is designed to attach to the original emblem mounting surface with double-sided 3m tape. I used the "VHB type" in a thinner (.7mm) version which should be suitable for this. The center hole of the adapter extends outward to fit into an enlarged center hole where the original emblem was mounted. This will center the adapter and also protect the wiring from the hatch sheet metal.
To begin, remove the original emblem. Carefully pry it outward from the hatch with a good quality tool and be patient to minimize risk of breaking the mounting tabs on the back of the emblem. When the emblem is out, you will see two oblong mounting holes and a center hole that accommodate the original emblem. To accommodate this adapter, carefully enlarge the center hole to an 8mm diameter. Deburr it with a file and protect the unfinished metal on the inside of the hole with protective paint.
Print the two halves of the adapter using ABS or PETG. Remove the protective film from the back of your LED emblem, thread the wire thru the curved half of the adapter, and adhere the double-sided tape on the emblem to the curved adapter surface. Next, use plastic epoxy to glue-together the two halves of the adapter together AFTER aligning the emblem wires inside the curved adapter wiring channel and through the hold in the other half. Ensure proper alignment of the halves: When the curved adapter + VW logo are pointing "up", the lip of the other half of the adapter should also be pointing up and the thicker "wedge" of this half should be downward. Look at the photos here, and test fit the emblem and adapters into the space in the hatch before gluing them so you have a visual understanding of how they should be aligned.
Remove the left license plate light (2 screws) and extend the light fixture from it's attachment point to expose the wiring. Using a thin, stiff, wire -- push through a small exposed slot in the inside of the license light opening and fish it behind the back until the wire protrudes from the enlarged center hole. Attach the end of the emblem wiring (you may need to extend the wires -- I did) to the wire and pull it through with the wire so It exits from the slot on the inside of the license plate light fixture opening. Using wire splices, attach the black/ground wire to the brown wire on the harness, and the red +12V wire to the other wire. Push the wiring inside the mounting hole and re-attach the license plate fixture with original two screws. See photos to help you understand this.
Use the 3M double-sided tape to affix the back of the adapter to the rear hatch. Make certain the tape is uniform, completely covers the outside perimeter of the adapter and the areas of the adapter that cover the oblong holes in the hatch. This will ensure proper adhesion and protect the original holes from water intrusion.
Always clean, degrease, and wipe surfaces with alcohol before gluing or using the 3m tape for proper adhesion.
