The Vertical Chessboard, aka Cat Proof Chess
Like most cats, my kitties look like adorable piles of fluff content on living the quiet life of napping and purring. But in reality they're little balls of evil and hate intent on destruction. Their favorite satanic activity is to look me dead in the eye while knocking down something that will shatter, but unattended chess pieces will do in a pinch. That’s why I made the Vertical Chessboard. It can easily be mounted on a wall, up and out of reach of their evil little paws.
The chess pieces were modified from PerryT’s excellent chess set here:
http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:40605
The board pieces were printed at 200-micron layer height with 20% infill. No supports are needed.
The pieces were done at 100-micron layer height with 30% infill. They WILL need supports and lots of them.
All together you will need to print:
Black:
Top x3
Top Right x1
Bottom Left x1
Bottom x3
Left x3
Right x3
Center x19
King and Queen x1
Bishop, Knight, Rook x2
Pawn x8
White:
Top x3
Top Left x1
Bottom Right x1
Bottom x3
Left x3
Right x3
Center x19
King and Queen x1
Bishop, Knight, Rook x2
Pawn x8
And lots and lots of pins to put it all together.
Notes:
The completed chess set in the images was printed at 80% scale.
The cat’s name is Two.
The top left and right pieces have keyhole slots to mount it on a wall but the completed print turned out to be so light I stuck mine up with poster tack instead.
This print will take several million years to complete and you could save time now by switching to a less time consuming hobby.
