Summary

This is a Motorized version of my original Triaxial Tourbillon Clock Make. The two major changes are that this version uses stepper motors to driver the carrier, and it incorporates the Triaxial Quartz Movement Upgrade. However, there are many other subtle differences from the original Triaxial design.

Here is a time lapse version of the design:

and a real-time video:

Overview of Triaxial makes:

My original Triaxial Tourbillon remix is weight driven and the STLs are versions of A26's design that I modified to add ball bearings and some other features. Given the plastic escapement parts the remix was never meant to keep correct time, also it is very inefficient so the weight only keeps it working for a couple of hours. Therefore it is not a practical clock. I designed the 'Triaxial Quartz Movement Upgrade', which replaces the clock face in the remix, so it could be used to display the correct time when it was hanging on a wall.

The weight in the Triaxial Tourbillon remix is painful to wind, so make it easier to animate I designed the Motorized Astronomia. For the Motorized Astronomia I basically started with a clean slate. All of the parts have been redesigned, with no intention to be compatible with my original remix.

jdirgo has done some great things with his make of the Motorized Astronomia (https://www.thingiverse.com/make:892383). Adapting the the gear driven hands of the remix to the Motorized version, and making a carbon fiber balance wheel to allow it to tick at an accurate rate.

Hopefully this information will help you know which design to download.

Apparently there were some errors in the high res (~150MB) "carrier 3.STL" file that I posted. So I've posted another high res "carrier 3 fixed.STL" file that is the original file has been fixed by the PrusaSlicer.

I posted two additional balance springs that are stiffer that than the original to provide a faster tick rate. The cross section of the original Balance Spring is 1.5x0.8mm, Balance Spring 2 is 2x1mm, and the Balance Spring 3 is 3x1mm.

Added missing Fork Frame Shaft.STL file.

It seems like Jacob and Co never makes the exact same watch twice. There are almost as many variations of Astromomia watch, as there are pictures of it on the web. I based this Motorized version on the model of the Jacob and Co. Astromomia watch in this video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvx0jXbKkV0

Most of the clock face parts will be the same as those in the Quartz Upgrade, this design includes a version of the clock face (Clock Face w Embedded Numerals) that can be printed in 2 colors where the second color determines the color of the numerals.

I started this project over a year ago. My original “Motorized” design also used two motors; one to turn the Carriage, and the other to drive the clock Hands. I never posted it because I wasn’t able to get the code to reliably display the correct time with the Hands stepper, after you started or stopped the Carriage stepper. I sent the Motorized STL files to ruzickjc (who is a much better coder that I am) to see if he could get it to work. His solution (shown here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wt_mqIPkCwM&t=110s) was to drop the Hands stepper motor, use a Quartz Movement to keep the correct time, only using the Carriage stepper motor. Note, that the code that he developed to drive the clock in his video became the code for the Furious, and (with a slight change) the code for this design.

After seeing what he did, I created the Triaxial Quartz Movement Upgrade (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3677946) for the original Triaxial, to provide a clean design for incorporating a quartz movement.

This version still uses 2 stepper motors, but running in parallel to drive the Carrier and provide more torque.

I want to thank ruzickjc, A26, Dexter_New_Materials, and bld.
ruzickjc for his help developing the code and the design changes that he made to get the Motorized concept to work.

Posted updated the Astro_Motorized_Stepper_V2.ino file. Fixes a bug where the initial speed was too high.

6/21/20
Posted debugged files and Build Notes
Generally, any part ending in a ' 2' is a part that I have modified during the debug process.

Posted detailed drawings of the various assemblies. Note that these drawings apply to the debugged versions of the parts, which I haven't posted yet.

I have finally completed my debugging and it's working very nicely. Spoiler Alert, I made changes to about 25% of the parts. I will post the updated STL files in the next day or two.

Initial posting of un-debugged STL files.
