Summary

UPDATE 12/23/2023

Based on feedback I've received and my own continued use of these models, I have updated two of the boxes. (meeple_box_v3.1.stl and bridge_box_v3.1.stl, plus their corresponding "lid" files)

The new meeple box has taller grid walls which make it more difficult to accidentally knock over the meeples when the grid is on the player board, and combined with the new box the meeples stay in place much better than before when the box is closed up. The lid also has square holes instead of round ones to give a bit more space to see the icons underneath. I also slightly adjusted the spacing for these cutouts to better align with the icons on the player boards.

The new bridge box stores the dice on the bottom and the bridges upside down. This greatly reduces the sizes of the cutouts and makes the boxes much stronger. I found the original bridge box lids did not stay on well after just a few uses because the box was too flimsy. This new design fixes that, and also keeps the dices from rattling around nearly as much.

If you want to "upgrade" to these new models, you only need to print the four models with "v3.1" in their file names.

I have moved the original models into the "Deprecated Models.zip" file and suggest anyone printing this for the first time consider ignoring these older designs.

Original Post

This is an insert designed to fit the game The White Castle. It supports sleeved cards, holds the assembled bridges, and has player meeple boxes with lids that serve as grids that can be placed directly on the player boards to help keep the meeples organized. As with "Version 2" of my insert, there will be "lid lift" equavalent to the thickness of the rule book(s) you store in the box. This is one of the tightest fitting games I've ever designed an insert for, so the design is a bit unusual. In particular, all of the players' heron pieces are stored in the box "loose," and the yard and dice tokens are stored in a box w/o a lid. (See the attached pictures.)

The bridge boxes and the grid boxes are very much inspired by the designs of others, but are my own designs, not strictly remixes. Note 2: If you have already printed my previous insert for this game but wish to change to this one, you will want to print all the new V3 pieces for best results. (The card boxes and turn token box are very similar from earlier versions, so you can try to reuse those but the money box might not sit quite right.)

The boxes with lids print best at 0.16 line height (0.4 nozzle) but 0.20 is OK for everything else. You really want to use 0.16 (or lower) for the boxes with lids as there are some small but steep overhangs that are supported much better by a slightly smaller line height. (Check your slice preview.) No supports are needed if you print at 0.16 or lower.

I printed these with 15% gyroid infill, but you can use 10% infill if you increase the number of top shell layers by one (or if you don't care about slight imperfections in the bottoms of the boxes). PLA/PLA+ works great for all of these.

Finally, the lids for all the boxes are friction fit and fit the bottom of their boxes so they don't get lost during play. The tolerances on these can be somewhat tight, but they came out beautifully on my Bambu X1C.

Model specific notes follow:

bridge_box_v3.1.stl, bridge_box_lid_v3.1.stl - Print three of these, one for each bridge and matching 5 dice.

cards_box_v2_1.stl, cards_box_v2_2.stl - Print one of each. You can add color on layer 4 or 5 (depending on line height) to make the embossed lettering at the bottom stand out.

meeple_box_v3.1.stl, meeple_box_lid_v3.1.stl - Holds all the player meeples. Print four of each box/lid pair, one in each player color (if you so choose). You can probably print one pair of box/lid together on the same plate.

money_box_v3.stl, money_box_lid_v3.stl - Holds the various cardboard tokens (money and Daimyo). Print one of each. You can probably print these together on the same plate.

player_box_v3.stl, player_box_lid_v3.stl - Holds the player Time and VP tokens for all four player colors as well as the resource marker cubes. Print one of each. You can defintely print these together on the same plate.

setup_box_v3.stl - Holds the game board tokens used to setup the game, as well as helping to keep the player boards in place. Print one.

turn_token_box_v3.stl - Holds the big wooden turn token. This is optional, but makes everything fit nicely. Print one of these.

spacer_v3.stl - This just helps keep the player boards from moving around, although it has a little bit of depth to it which could hold a stick of gum or something like that. ;-) Print one.
