Summary

With the spartan interior of the M3 it was difficult to find a way to rest my phone on the dash. The revolutionary air vent technology is amazing, however it is not compatible with any commercial phone vent mounts out there. I did search thingiverse after making my thingie and found a Heads up Display version which also looks like an interesting solution.

I started in Tinkercad with this phone stand (remixed) which looked big enough to fit my phone and wallet sleeve. About 10 printed iterations later (designed with caliper and trial/error) I came up this phone stand. It clips into the bottom vent holes securely anywhere along the dashboard.

I would be interested if anyone could re-mix this design to make a phone mount or associate it with a modular mounting system. Also the clip seems secure enough to hang a bag from.

Disclaimers- Distracted driving is dangerous and use at your own risk, however I would not recommend using this for anything other than gps/maps. Although the M3 cabin should prevent heating over 100degF, I would be worried about PLA melting in hot weather. Take care to not to let pieces of your print break off/fall into the vent mechanism because I think it would be hard to get them out! I didn’t find the small footprint of the vent clip to interfere with the cabin airflow, but interference seems possible.
