Summary

I recently designed a set of ancient Greek vessels for a small academic project. Turns out they work beautifully as flower vases, water containers, watering can, flower pots, and yes, they make ultra stylish egg cups.

Here the one we use as our new egg cups:

  • A Bell Crater, a vessel used in Ancient Greece for the mixing wine with water

FILAMENT. I once again used this Terracotta PLA Filament, which they claim contains 50%(!) powdered stone filling, is pretty heavy and creates a matte, slightly stonish surface so looks and feels almost like real terracotta. Plus the printed layers create a look that closely resembles the surface of clay formed on a potter's wheel.

PRINTING. Turns out this filament is surprisingly easy to print but requires somewhat higher printing temperatures than ordinary PLA (I use 220-230°C). Use thick (around 0.2mm) layers to create a surface structure similar to that created on a potter's wheel, 30-100% infill depending on how heavy you want it to be. Print the amphora upside down, the oenochoe as is. I print mine without supports but you may want to use supports for the handles only (the inside of the vessels is designed so it won't need any supports). You can scale the models to any size you want (well I guess it depends on the size of the eggs you eat, so if its an ostrich egg, printing could take a little longer). I use some cheap epoxy resin for sealing my prints (i.e. making them waterproof), which in this case is not absolutely necessary.

POST PRINTING (OPTIONAL). Slightly sand the surface if you want to paint the vases. You can use any ordinary acrylic colors for painting. Use a transparent film as varnish.

Enjoy and happy printing!
