This is a model of a step chest or Tansu in 1:12 scale. A long time ago storage was built into the staircase to take advantage of the odd shape. This is designed in modules like modern (fake antique) step chest furniture. This allows flexibility so that you can build according to the space you have available and the shape you want. To build a standard stairway you will need one Step Chest main chest, two step chest steps, one step chest base, four step chest drawer 1, and two step chest small drawers. You may want to glue the top and side cases to the main chest for stability. If you prefer you can print the main chest and top and side chests as a single unit using the file "step chest casing".
I used drawers vice doors to create the storage space as hinges at this size are fragile. The steps make a lovely display shelves to display various knick knacks. In my actual one at home I have whales, turtles, manta ray, and shark carvings arrayed on the steps. You could do something similar in miniature.
This is rugged enough design that you could shrink down to quite a bit smaller scale if desired. You can also print the drawers in different colors to add some contrast.
