Street corners designed for use in teaching Orientation and Mobility (O&M) concepts for people who are blind or have low vision.
A variety of pieces are provided: corners with sharp or rounded corner, straight pieces and Y-intersection pieces, each with a variety of curb cuts/curb ramps/depressed curbs/dropped kerbs/kerb ramps/pram ramps. Two of the straight pieces illustrate driveways, with or without attached houses. There are also roundabout and pedestrian island pieces.
Print each piece at 12.7cm wide for 1:128 scale. Four pieces can be combined to create a cross intersection, T- intersection, Y intersection or straight road. Use them to illustrate typical intersection layouts or a particular intersection being learned.
We recommend creating a frame (using wood or cardboard) to snugly fit four pieces so that they will not move when being explored by touch.
See also thing:5178823 for street signs and pedestrians that can be used with the intersection pieces to illustrate pedestrian and traffic movement.
Further details are given in the Word document, "3D Printed Street Crossings for Orientation and Mobility - A Guide for Production and Use", which is included as a downloadable file.
These materials were created as part of an ARC Linkage Project investigating the use of 3D printing for people who are blind or have low vision. Thanks are extended to the Australian Research Council, Monash University, Guide Dogs Victoria and our other partners.
