Summary

I've tried various filament clips and didn't feel fully content with any of them, so I decided to create my own. I noticed that the spools with the tiny hole on the rim can be used to insert the filament end and it works so well. Only down side is the filament end sticks out from the spool side, which causes crimping on the filament when placed into a confined box. So I've created this using inspirations of elements that I like from various other clips.

My requirements for the clip are:

  • Quick deploy and removal of filament and clip
  • Can be placed anywhere along the rim of the spool
  • Can be used for almost all the common spool rims
  • Doesn't crimp or damage the filament
  • Doesn't stick out the filament from the spool
  • Sturdy

I've included 3 clip types:

  • 1.75mm
  • 1.75mm tight - for more secure filament friction fit in the hole
  • 2.85mm

I think what I've come up with checks all the above requirements. I hope you will find it useful as well!

NOTE: Some Ender 3 owners have reported that the screw may be too tight when printed at 100% scale. Try scaling the screw down 97%.

UPDATE:
2/28/21

  • I have added a 95% scaled screw in case 92% was a tad too loose.

2/21/21

  • I have updated the screw to be smaller for better tolerance. It's now about 92% of the original size.
