Many thanks to WheresWaldo. I took his design, added a filet around the base of the shaft and turned it to print sideways. When printed sideways with a raft and supports the edges of the ball and the mount are a little rougher, but the inside of the slots are printed cleanly and it's much, much easier to clean off the supports. Additionally the Makerbot prints the shaft with the plastic laid down end to end so it's much stronger than if it's done across the thin shaft. Not much of a change, but easier to print and stronger.
