Slimed!

Turn your Christmas ornaments into slimed versions with this easy print. Whether your theme is Ghostbusters, The Blob, Matrix, The Thing, Alien, or You Can't Do That on Television, you can size, print and tint it to fit.

How To:

Measure your holiday ornament

This was designed to fit a 38mm hanging ball, but it can be easily scaled in your slicer to fit any sized ball.

Size, Position, Support and Slice

I printed these with the top down and angled about 45 degrees. I made sure the longest part was at the top for weight. A combination of heavy, medium, and light supports resulted in successful prints that took roughly 5 hours for three.

Choose your Medium

These were printed using Elegoo ABS Like Transparent. They could also be printed with any resin (transparent, coloured, or opaque). I assume they could also be printed on an FDM, but be careful of tolerances.

Print, Clean and Cure

If you're printing with coloured resin then you're pretty much done after you cure. If you're using Transparent or opaque resin you will need to cure and then consider colouring.

Post Process

When using transparent resin, the marks from the supports capture the colour and become quite noticeable. Take some 400 grit sandpaper and gently wet sand the top where the supports were. It only takes a few passes for a nice smooth finish.

Color

To get the green and pink slime I put on a pair of gloves and then gently rubbed in food colouring with my fingers. After letting it dry a few moments I repeated the process until I got them as dark as I wanted. You can also use alcohol dyes or other resin dyes if you like or if going for a solid colour, paint as desired.

Seal the Deal

The final step is to spray with a sealer to protect the dye. I used a simple Satin rattle can sealer found in the hardware store. Choose a gloss for a more transparent and glossy look.

Slime It!

The final step is to gently slip the slime over your holiday ornament. If the sizing is correct, it should slip into place. If you find that you would like to adjust the drips or if it isn't fitting as well as you would like, heat the print in hot water for a few seconds and then gently bend the drips to the desired position.

Thanks for downloading and giving this print a try. I hope it adds a little fun to your holiday!
