Problem: My seedlings are small and to not only make them grow roots, I use small pot trays as well for them. So I can't use proper bamboo rods to keep them straight up. Also, when pre-growing them indoors, due to the bad lighting situation, they tend to grow thin and high, which bears the risk of them snapping.
Now, bamboo skewers, that are to my knowledge worldwide sold for almost no money and in the same size of about 3mm, were the perfect solution, if it wasn't for the issue of attaching the tiny seedlings to the skewers in a way that
a) my stubby fingers are able to perform,
b) doesn't choke the seedlings to death, even if I don't check on their growth for some days and
c) doesn't by its sheer untamed weight wrestle the seedling down onto the ground.
So here's my solution. It's a remix of the "Simple plant clip V2" by JJ8002, which in comparison to his original has the advantage of being clippable to the skewer in a certain height. I find this to be practical especially for seedlings that grow tall and thin in the first weeks, like parsley, so the seedling doesn't have to carry the clips weight.
The clips works well for small plants up to a stem diameter of about 8mm. After that, they should be able to stand on their own or need a bigger stick to be bound to anyway.
If you have any improvement ideas or issues regarding my design, please leave me a comment or just go on and remix it again. Always happy to see designs being developed or individualized. Also, I love to see my designs in use, so please post a make, if you print this.
Thanks for reading, now go grow yourself a potato for the long post.
P.S.: If you only have left little filament on your spool, this the ideal print. Even if you can't finish the last layer or something, it really doesn't matter much.
Updates:
V2: reduced gap between the 'pliers'
V3: optimized geometry for a better grip on slightly differing skewer diameters
