It also helps to better visualize the combat if for example, some NPCs need help or if they appear to be able to hold the line.

Update: Elite Token
Elites (denoted by the skull and stars) are not regular units; they are either bigger than normal (for low intelligence creatures such as slimes), much more numerous (for swarms) or more experienced/higher level. It can also denote whoever appears to be in command of the group (if applicable). As always, this can work both ways, facing an elite enemy can be a challenge, but getting reinforced by an elite troop can show the PCs that things may be escalating.
