Summary

I am in the early stages of making a 3D printed clock. Here, I'm sharing what I've learned about clock gears. Typical gear teeth are involute. Clocks are about the only place to find cycloidal gear teeth. They are designed to run without lubrication and the small pinion gears can have fewer teeth than an involute gear.

Cycloidal teeth are actually simple. The sides are radial lines from the hub of the gear. The tip of the tooth can just be a semi-circle, instead of a cycloid. The pinion teeth should be narrower than the 50% you'd expect in a gear tooth.

These gears are a 2:1 ratio.
