Summary

Hello,

This is a project I did to create some Sim-Racing pedals. I made these from mostly 3D printed parts, all of which are attached to this thing page.

Please see my video for an explanation on how it was designed, and how the electrics are wired up!

The following HW was used in addition to the 3D printed components (List quantities are per each pedal, with the exception of the Arduino):

  1. M2x14 SH Bolt, Qty 6, Used to fix the pedal head to the pedal spacer
  2. M2 Nut, Qty 6
  3. Compression Springs, Qty 1, ~60mm x 20mm with ~30mm compression, I used the springs from my old Logitech Pedals
  4. 5/16-24 x 2" SH Bolt, Qty 2, Used to fix the base channel to the other components
  5. 5/16-24 x 1.25" SH Bolt, Qty 1, Used at the pedal/spring house interface
  6. 5/16-24 Nut, Qty 3
  7. M6 SH Bolt x 20mm, Qty 3
  8. M6 Nut, Qty 3
  9. Skateboard Bearings, Qty 6, 22mm diameter, 7mm thick
  10. 10kΩ Potentiometer, Qty 1, 270 degree range
  11. 10kΩ Resistor, Qty 1
  12. 1kΩ Resistor, Qty 1
  13. LED, Qty 1
  14. Arduino Micro, Qty 1
  15. Solder
  16. Wire

Some Tips if you decide to make these:

  1. You may need to play around with your printer settings to get the best results. For example, I had to use rafts to get the gear teeth to print correctly. Also, the pedal head (the part that your foot touches) needed to be printed with at least 50% infill to feel solid.
  2. You will need to use sand paper (I used 120 grit, then 400 grit, and then 600 grit) on the spring assembly to get it to slide smoothly.
  3. Installing the pedal head to the spacer is a really annoying installation. You may need to use super glue to keep the nuts in place inside their little hexagonal alcoves before trying to install the bolts. I did not use super glue here, just a lot of patience.
  4. I had an issue where if I made the holes for the bearings too tight in the large base piece, I would break the part when inserting the bearings. Hence, I left them a little loose, and when installing them, I used thin strips of electrical tape around the perimeters of the bearings to get them to fit snugly.
