I needed to make a supply shelf for my wife but didn't want to use bulk 2x4s as support. The support boot should fit primed 1X2 available at Lowe's or Home Depot. The pilot hole and pilot hole and countersink are for 2 inch trim screws and will not blow out the back of 3/4 material. In my case I decided using self tapping trim screws, but even still I pre-drilled pilot holes into the support leg and shelf to prevent walking.
One thing to take into account is an uneven wall surface. I didn't which resulted in the boot and the edge of the shelf not lining up. Not a big deal in my case, but I certainly wouldn't show it off to the neighbors.
