Summary

After Adam Savage complained about the new version of Sharpwriter plastic pencils not giving him the right vibe, I decided to model the pencil body so I could 3D print it in colors that matched MY vibe.

The barrel has a pair of straight internal channels that keep the lead holder from twisting. When the lead holder engages with the tip assembly spring and the tip/spring is rotated it causes the lead holder to move axially - extending or retracting the lead.

This project requires a donor pencil from which you will harvest the internals - lead/lead holder, tip/spring. and eraser.

  1. Remove the eraser
  2. Turn the tip/spring to retract the lead until it is visible from the top
  3. Remove the led/leader holder by pulling it straight out of the top
  4. Remove the tip/spring with a pair of pliers
  5. Drop the lead holder/lead down the 3D printed barrel so the lead extends from the bottom
  6. Start installation of the tip/spring by sliding the lead into the center of the spring
  7. Rotate the spring clockwise so that it engages the lead holder - this will cause the lead to move toward the tip
  8. Press the tip into the barrel until locks into place
  9. Rotate the tip as usual to extend the lead until it is at the correct distance for use.
  10. Install the eraser - and write a poem, novel, or make a sketch with your New favorite pencil
