Summary

UPDATE 2024-11-17:

  • Consider an improved design at https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6834442. It is customizable, via PythonScad (a fork of OpenScad).
  • This design had two flaws: (1) There is insufficient surface area to hold debris, and I had to clean it once a day whenever it rains (2) The rim/lip means there is a thin layer of standing water as debris accumulates.
  • The improve design solves both of these problem with a larger surface area and a honeycomb pattern to ensure every water level has some direct flow to the drainage.

Why did you make this

This is a remix of Milkdog's "Customizable Atrium Drain Grate", but with drain gaps on the disk base.

My drain does not have a dip, so the base sits flush with the floor.

I needed gaps on the disk to drain water away to avoid pooling.

Instead of filing gaps down, I customized the openscad to have a configurable number of gaps between spokes for draining.

What is configurable?

NOTE: thingiverse's Customize button does not seem to do import STLs as components. You must use OpenSCAD if you wish to tweak dimensions.

The OpenSCAD file has a new variable named num_drain_gaps in which you can control number of drain gaps. The image and sample STL has it set to 6.

For best results, select num_drain_gaps that are small divisors of num_spokes.

Some best-effort fuzziness was implemented to align gaps to be between spokes as much as possible. It works well when num_drain_gaps that are small divisors of num_spokes.
