Summary

A jig for aligning and gluing fins and launch lugs onto model rockets. This version is for BT-20 rocket tubes and card-stock fins for rockets such as the Estes Viking. The jigs can also be used to mark the fin and launch lug locations prior to gluing. There are two versions here, one for 3-fins and another for 4-fins. There is also an optional stand to lift the jig up slightly so fins can extend down for gluing. I use a glue super glue to glue on the fins in my classes since it fits the attention span of of most younger children!
The jigs can be printed from PETG or PLA, however I find that PETG holds up better to handling by the kids and is more resistant to gluing. If necessary, acetone can be used to remove excess superglue from PETG rocket jigs. When printing the jigs a brim may be helpful due to the low surface area of the jig.
To use:
1) Slide body tube into the jig.
2) Mark the body locations for the fin and also for the launch lug.
3) Rotate the body tube in the jig to align the marks with the fin “clips”
4) Optionally tape the lug marking section of the jig to the tube to prevent it from moving.
5) Glue the fins, TAKE CARE NOT TO GLUE JIG TO THE FINS OR THE BODY TUBE!
6) When the glue is dry, carefully slide the jig downward to remove it from the rocket and fins.

Revised Feb 2024 to increase the spacing between the fin clips and the fig to make it easier to glue the fins onto the body tube without gluing the jig to the rocket!
