The file 'Rice Washer (fully Printable) 3D Printer Model' is (stl) file type, size is 2.2MB.

Summary

So I've finally finished full redesign (or making from the scratch to be true), printed and assembled the new version of rice washer. It is smaller, have better look (I hope :) ) and is much easier to assemble after print (less details and no gluing/filament welding required).

It fits about 150-160 g of rice which is more than enough in my opinion. It is also fully printable - even its mesh can be printed (but you can also use one bought in store ofcourse).

The only thing you need to buy is pair of 6000 plastic/ceramic bearings (10x26x8 size) which are used for smoother rotation of drum. You can get them from AliExpress for example (I've got these. Works like a charm :) ). You also can try to use 3d-printed ones like these ones (tried them but wasn't very happy with the result. Maybe my printer isn't perfectly calibrated :) ). Please note that we should have as low friction as possible to make device work as expected.

Details and print settings

The default print settings for all details were:

  • 0.24 mm layers
  • speed:
    • 30 mm/s speed for outer walls, top and bottom shells
    • 60 mm/s for inner walls/infill.

But each detail require some specific settings changes:

  • Drum - 100% infill, 5-6 walls and supports.
  • Drum inset - 100% infill and supports
  • Mesh_x2 - you need two of them. Layer height 0.3 or 0.15 if you wish better quality. (The detail contains 2 layers of wires, 0.3 mm each)
  • Drum cap - 20% infill.
  • Axis - you need two of them. 20% infill. There are 2 variants:
    • Rice-washer_axis-8.5_x2 - tight fit, default option
    • Rice-washer_axis-8.0_x2 - loose fit.
  • Tray - 20% infill. Optionally 0.28 layer for quicker print.

Assembly instructions

  1. Place meshes inside the drum in circle if viewing from top. The vertical mesh lines should face inwards. The meshes should fit tight and dock end-to-end.
  2. The bottoms of meshes should stand on annular ledge which is located in the lower part inside the drum.
  3. Put the drum inset into the drum. Make sure that the annular ledge ON INSET is at the top (this will fix in place mesh and don't let it move inside the drum).
  4. Align the stands on the inset and drum. Check that the joints of the mesh parts are hidden behind the stands.
  5. Push the inset in drum until it stops. The top ends of inset and drum should be on the same level.
  6. Check the mesh. It should now be now securely fixed and couldn't move relative to the drum. If not check:
    • if both mesh parts sides are not overlapping
    • If both mesh parts are resting on an annular ledge inside the drum
  7. Insert axis in the holes on lid top and drum bottom from outside. It should fit tight enough to not to fall out.
  8. Install bearings on axes. They should fit tight enough on axes too.

Materials and time spent

Using provided settings total printing time is about 21 hours.
241 g filament and two plastic bearings are used.

V2 Update (28.02.2022)

A bit modified some parts:

  • Drum and Cap - added small holes in drum bottom and cap top which help to remove the stragglers. Big thanks to mellow_is_fire for his advice :)
  • Tray - made side walls thicker which makes the tray stronger. It also doesn't have overhangs. This version uses more plastic so it is much heavier than original. (By the way, in my opinion the original version is strong enough but you may have another point of view :) )

All V2 details are fully backward compatible with original details, so you are free to mix them with original ones in your build.

V3 update (02.03.2022):

Added additional blades to the drum due to 4 blades didn't produce enough power to rotate the drum wfen it is filled with rice.

  • Rice-washer_drum-V3.stl - drum with added additional blades.
  • Rice-washer_drum-V3-addon.stl - pack of details to convert original and V2 drums to V3. You need to glue them to the original/V2 drum.
