The shopping mall I visit most often uses a few different types of trolleys which don't fit each other. On more than one occasion all corrals were occupied by one type, so I couldn't return my own trolley of a different type, so I decided to design a shopping coin that could be slid out of the trolley lock without having to connect it to another one.
This Trolley Cheater allows you to unlock a trolley and then remove it without the need to lock it back. The sliding part of the handle contains a peg which keeps the "coin" part of the Trolley Cheater from changing shape. Once it's retracted, both halves of the "coin" can be squeezed together and pulled out past the coin locking mechanism.
The Trolley Cheater should be compatible with most types of trolley locks accepting coins the size of 1 or 2 Euro coins, except the ones where you have to place a coin in a drawer which slides into the lock completely.
