Summary

I designed a Raspberry Pi server rack mount with up to two status indicator LEDs and power/shutdown button at front panel. It does allow to mount up to two Raspberry Pi in a 10" server rack in 1U height (one on the left, a second one on the right).

In addition I designed a tiny PCB to add up to two status indicator LEDs and a power/shutdown button at the front panel to easily power (or shutdown) your pi while it is mounted in a server rack. In addition this PCB allows to connect a cooling fan and necessary electronics (transistor etc).

Bill of materials:

  • 1x Raspberry Pi 3B+
  • 1x Fan (3x3 cm) like this one: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B00UWIB68U
  • 1x NPN Transistor
  • 1-2x LED 3mm (any colour) + protective resistor
  • 1x Button like these ones: https://www.amazon.de/dp/B00D82M9LA
  • optional self designed front panel PCB for easy access while mounted in a server rack. (I did order some more than I do need for myself and am happy to send those out. Just drop me a message...).
  • some wires

This is how you need to wire everything up:

Pi Header PIN Front panel PCB Colour in Picture
4 (+5V) FAN Ctr: PWR FAN pink
5 (GPIO 3) BTN: BTN grey
6 (GND) LED: GND blue
8 (GPIO 14) LED: LED 1 yellow
9 (GND) BTN: GND black
12 (GPIO 18) FAN Ctr: IO white

To use the button as a power button follow this instruction:

If you want the LED function as a status LED you need to make some adjustment to your pi. Edit your /boot/config.txt file and add the following line: "enable_uart=1".
