Summary

Overview

In the complex organic system represented by pneumOS, the element that emulates alien lung function and transmits aesthetic information by reproducing respiratory acts is structured into four main components

  • a lung sac
  • a linear actuation mechanism that determines its expansion and contraction,
  • an electronic system that, by receiving signals through API, regulates the dynamics of movement,
  • a housing that encloses the mechanism and the electronic system, integrating and supporting the three main components within the metal base.

A digitally fabricated sculptural work, resembling a bone structure, aesthetically separates the bag from the metal base of the art installation.

The 3D-printed mould for the bag

The breathing bag is developed in silicone from a 3D-printed mould. This cast will also be used by schools participating in the ‘Polmone Scolastico’ (School Lung) programme, to realise a simplified replica of the Pneumos project in their own school, working on a STEM project on art, territory and expressivity.

The cast consists of two components. The aim is to make a bag with the following measurements:

  • External bag diameter: 200 mm
  • Inner bag diameter: 190 mm
  • Bag thickness: 5 mm
  • Number of holes: 16 (15 for the ventilation papillae, 1 for the papilla attached to the linear actuator)
  • Diameter of ventilation holes: 13 mm
  • Diameter of central hole: 11 mm

The 3D-printed mould for papillae and suction cups

The papillae and suction cup casts consist of three parts: the base and a bivalve shell. In addition, there are 3D-printed rods to make the element perforated, allowing air to pass through.

The moulds of these elements can be improved, so the original shapes of a papilla and a suction cup are also included in the design.

The 3D-printed mould for the central papillae

The central papilla consists of a bolt attached to the linear actuator, and passes through the central hole. On the outside, it is covered by a silicone cap, made using a dedicated mould
