After many washings and airing out these smelly rubber weight plates for about 2 months they continued to smell, so I decided to paint them. I started putting painter's masking tape inside the metal center holes but I found that was taking too much time and there wasn't a consistently smooth line.
So I created these little plastic sleeves to stick into the holes in the weight plates while painting. One goes in each side and I put masking tape in the middle which was much quicker (well, after waiting for the 3-D printer) and produced a more consistent line. After a good cleaning, I spray painted the weight plates different colors according to their weight.
If we aren't too hard on the weight plates, hopefully the paint will last awhile, and will seal in the putrid rubber smell.
