Spool holder and bearing system I designed for use on the Wombot Exilis XL, will work on any printer using 30x30 or 20x20 extrusion in the frame (there are files for the bearing tower in each size).

Designed for easy assembly. Simply put the axle into one of the inserts and slide the universal insert into the spool, and slide the other insert in from the other side over the axle... the axle keeps them nice and centered and eliminates sag in the spool. Then you put the bearings over the hexes on the inserts, and drop the whole assembly into the cups on the towers.

The bearing towers don't need to be printed with support, as I have designed a support into it for the overhanging lip when printing it on it's side... these diagonal zig zag supports need to be removed with a screwdriver following printing... it's very easy.

The spool locking insert are designed to fit most generic spools, and the axle is used to keep the inserts aligned and keep everything rotating smoothly.

The planetary gear bearing is not my design, and was customised using Emmett's Gear Bearing here on thingiverse. I have simply taken it and tidied the outside geometry slightly. It works flawlessly, providing exceptionally smooth rotation of the spool and gentle continuous filament supply with no strain on the extruder. A bit of silicone lubricant spray makes it turn even smoother.
