Summary

EDIT: It is now December 2020. What a year....AMIRIGHT?! When I first submitted this, I was completely new to placing files. ...and now, I've learned a thing or two....and three.

I made this for my 1949 Ford because I needed a shift knob that felt more at home than what was available, so I designed this one. After a first run (in the photos) a test print. Then I printed this with "Rust-able PLA" from Proto-Pasta to add ultimate character. That filament did rust, but not much. So, instead I printed the piston from silver PETG to help withstand summer heat during car shows. The piston was then covered with a heavy dose of clear coat. I waited for it to dry enough to be tacky and then threw iron dust all over it and let it dry. While studying Rat Rod-isms, I learned an easy way to make that iron rust REALLY quick! Use vinegar and salt mix and sprayed it lightly on the piston/iron dust. After the 3rd treatment it had this cool effect of rust streaks. I then clear coated it 5 more times to really lock it in and thick enough for a lil wear-n-tear.

Now for the details since I finally know what I am talking about.
Filament: Overture 1.75mm PETG "Space Gray"
Settings:

  • Shell and top/bottom thicknesses - 1mm
  • Layer/Resolution: 0.2mm is fine enough, especially if you're going to coat it.
  • Print speed: 65mm/s²
    Temps: Nozzle- @ 238°C to 242°C / Bed- @60°C

Once I loaded this onto the Creality Ender 5 Pro's software, I scaled it down to Dia. 64.0mm and H at 73.38mm.
