Summary

First of all, this is still a WIP design and is in its very early stages of design. As you will see, most of the pictures depict a y-axis with only 2 extrusions and one of the pictures depicts a y-axis with 3 extrusions, the dual extrusion design is actually already outdated and the triple extrusion design is the one the files are actually for, all of these images will slowly be replaced and each file will be updated over time before this machine is complete. As of now, I don't recommend building one unless you can design the rest of the machine to suit your own need. The estimated date of completion is not yet known, however, since I am in my final GCSE year and have more important work to take care of, you could expect at least another month before even a slightly working complete model has been released.

I still have many parts to design, so here's a list:

  • y motor mount
  • tidy up z motor mount
  • make x-axis carriers
  • x motor mount
  • x belt tensioner/ end pulley
  • extruder carriage
  • The rest of the brackets holding the machine together (current files are bound to change)
  • internal electrics mount
  • proper side panels (the panels you see in the images are actually just simple mockups,
    roughly like the final design.
  • spool holder
  • and stop mounts

things I may possibly add:

  • quick swap extruder/ tool carriage (the plan is to have a standard carriage which you can't
remove, but instead, you click or screw in different tools which have adapters to fit the
carriage. I would want to do this so that I can quickly swap between direct drive and e3d
type extruders for when I'm printing different types of material)
  • dual extrusion setup (e3d type only, no direct drive dual)
  • hiwin rail axis (not currently planned at all(possibly a v2 of the machine))
  • some neat extruder covers (like the bcn3d extruders)
  • cable management

This is the BOM as of now, this will definitely change as the project continues:
extrusions:

  • 460mm 2020 extrusion (x6)
  • 100mm 2060 extrusion (x2)
  • 380mm 2020 extrusion (x1)
  • 360mm 2020 extrusion (x4)
  • 100mm 2020 extrusion (x9)
  • 180mm 2020 extrusion (x1)
  • 230mm 2020 extrusion (x1)
  • 290mm 2020 extrusion (x1)

      rods:
  • 380mm 8mm hardened steel smooth polished rod (x6)
  • XXXmm 8mm hardened steel smooth polished rod (x2) (this for the x-axis, length
    still unknown)

      printed parts: (not complete)
  • 380mm rod end (x2)
  • 380mm rod end mirror (x1)
  • 380mm end rear left short (x1)
  • lower extrusion spacer (x2) (bound to change)
  • z axis motor mount nema 17 (x2)
  • centre y bracket (x2)
  • front belt tensoiner bracket (x1)
  • belt pulley carrier tightener (x1)
  • belt tightener screw (x1)
  • screw plate (x1)
  • centre y bracket with cutout (x2)
  • far left short bracket (x2)

that's it for now, for any questions just comment, I'm usually fairly quick to reply if necessary or someone else hasn't already answered your question.

NOTE: for the future, the side panels will all be released in the .dxf format.
NOTE2: don't come asking for the f360 files, I won't give you that much, live with the .st
files.
NOTE3: if you decided to print all of these parts with some others you made yourself, don't
come crying to me if nothing fits. This design is not complete and not tested at all.

NOTE4: (this is for the future) this design is designed to work with the anet a8, in fact, it was
Originally designed to be an upgrade but now that things got out of hand in my
mind, this is a whole new printer. if you do upgrade your a8 to this you will
obviously, need all the extrusions, you will also need a lot of plastic and 2 extra
380mm 8mm dia smooth rods
Since the z-axis uses 4 instead of 2.

NOTE5: (also for the future) Since this isn't necessarily an upgrade anymore but a new
printer, i will eventually also upload files for a 300mm,300mm,400mm(or 300) build
volume (the brackets need to be modified) and a 214mm,214mm,300mm(or 200)
build volume (for mk2a and mk2 beds. Both of these custom build volumes will
include a proper bed suppoert plate in the .dxf format so that you can still use the
normal y-axis rod spacing with a larger bed. This printer is not size customizable
simply by changing extrusion length (except maybe z-axis, but the panels won't fit
then.

petal 1.1 update (1st October):

  • remodelled the z-axis motor mounts
  • began work on the x-axis carriers, files have been uploaded, will be revised
    sooner or later.
  • began a mockup of the extruder as you can see in one of the pictures without the
side panels on, I'm going for a Bcn3d extruder look.
  • the x axis turns out to be a bit difficult because things looks bigger in CAD than
    they really are :/
-the distance between the two x rods is only 27mm, yes, 2.7cm, not alot, i think
the anet a8 has around 40mm between the two rods which means that all anet
and other i3 printer type extruder mods won't be compatible with this printer. I'll
probably end up remodelling the whole x axis just for the sake of compatability
