Summary

I have a lot of pens to make. Cutting the blanks is time consuming and I was using a sled that I was not happy with, so I went to YouTube and I found this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-8GQh_Ynls

Looked like a good solution. But the company that makes this jig is no longer available or doesn't make the jig. It was a very simple design, not too different from some styles of dado jigs.

I have a small cheap band saw that I want to keep a blade that is good for cutting blanks on, and then I can leave my larger bandsaw for preparing the blanks. I modified a miter gauge for use on the small bandsaw and printed the jig.

The jig goes together with brass inserts and screws. Assemble the plate and the fence first. I used a dovetail slide in the fence for added stability and so the stoppers work better in plastic. Slide one side of the transfer arm into the dovetail and then slide in the stopper. In the pictures I used the horizontal, two part stoppers. Then slide in the other side of the transfer arm. I squared up the transfer arm to the side of the jig near the blade. Move the inside stopper to the away from the blade side inside of the transfer arm and lock it in place. I used a 5/16th inch allen wrench as a spacer to offset the jig from the blade, most pen blanks call for 1/16 inch offset. I used double sided tape to attach it to the miter gauge.

To use it, put the pen tube between the space and the off-blade inside of the transfer arm. Put your blank on the outside of the transfer arm where it will be cut by the blade. Hold it with all of your body parts in a safe position or use a clamp if that's not possible. Make the cut. The piece will be the length of the tube plus the offset from the blade when you set it up. Print two stoppers, if you plan on making a lot of the same length blank and used the second stopper on the outside non-blade side of the transfer arm. Pictures are included that show the process.

There is a vertical oriented stopper that is more convenient for the length stopper.
