Summary

This is a customizable hinged case, primarily for game tokens that are used a lot during board games, that allows you to quickly make a tray by giving it the outside dimensions of the tray (height, width, length). It features:

  • Height, length, and width can be given as inside dimensions (if you know the sizes of the bins and trays you will be putting inside) or as outside dimensions (if you are constrained by the size of the box you are putting the case into)
  • Wall thickness is customizable
  • a small notch can be added to the base of the case so that you can slip a finger underneath flat objects at the bottom of the case (e.g. papers) without having to make the case larger

The hinge portion of the case simply uses a 1.75 mm filament as the hinge pin. Cut a piece to size and slide it through the hole.

The case is designed to work with Parametric Token Trays:

and Parametric Token Bins:

When you save or render the scad file, the console will show both the inside and outside box dimensions for what you have built. This allows you to for example, use the constrained outside dimensions based on box size to then determine the maximum sizes of boxes you can put inside the tray.

I typically use 0.5 mm between each box/tray in the case and between the sides of the case and the trays, and give a 1.0 mm clearance between the top of the boxes and trays inside the case.

The case is part of the Customizable Board Game Organizational System! Check out the main page for CuBGOS at: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3117083

P.S. While the case is designed from scratch in openscad by myself, I relied heavily on the look and mechanics of the Small Storage System by @CaptainObvious, and that project deserves mention (which is why it is listed in the "remixed from" section). Check out his Thing here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1493275 . My design is a pale imitation of theirs in terms of aesthetics, and if you simply need some great cases and boxes for holding things in one of the sizes already offered by the Small Storage System, then I highly recommend it!
