Summary

This is a wee design for a simple toy Waverley-inspired RC boat that I made a few years ago as a gift for my nephew. It's very simple to build and operate. Sadly, I never took a photograph of the finished article before delivering it, so a render will have to suffice. The other photo was a ballast-test, so don't use it for assembly reference.

Required hardware:

  • 2pcs N20 gear motors (get the fastest ones possible)
  • 4pcs M1.6x3 countersunk Screws (to affix the gear motors to the hull)
  • 3mm Brass Rod (2pcs 6mm lengths)
  • 2pcs Brushed Motor ESCs (they need to have forward and reverse)
  • Servo V-tail Mixer (If your transmitter doesn't have built-in V-Tail mixing)
  • Battery (I leave that up to the builder, I used something that had AA batteries as they are easier to find for non-hobbyists)
  • 4pcs M4 Thumb Screws (I used nice red ones to look like ventilators)
  • 4pcs M4x4mm Heat Stake Threaded Inserts
  • 64pcs 2.5x6mm self-tapping plastic screws

Build tips:

  • Epoxy the two OD3x6mm rod lengths into the holes on the paddle housings. They form part of the axle for the paddle wheels.
  • Take a 2.5x6mm self-tapping plastic screw and heat it with a lighter, screw it into and out of all the holes in the paddle wheels before assembly to pre-form the threads. This should stop the part splitting when it's assembled on the boat
  • Assemble the hull with paddle boxes (but not the paddle housing covers) attached, paint it up and sand it etc before installing any further hardware. I suggest painting the funnels, superstructure, and deck separately.
  • The assembly of the paddles is a bit tricky, but it does work: First install the motors in the rectangular holes from the inside of the hull. The screws go in from the outside. You'll need a long screwdriver. Once the motors are in push the inner paddle piece onto the motor shaft. Take the outer paddle piece (make sure you have the right one), put it up into the housing and over the 3mm stub axle. Holding it there, screw the paddle blades into place between the inner and outer housings. Turn the paddle to screw each following blade in place. Once both paddles are assembled to your satisfaction, you can glue the housing cover in place.
  • Run the ESCs for both motors through the V-Tail mixer. This gives your paddle boat differential steering, like a tank.
  • The 4mm threaded inserts get heat-staked into the holes in the hull, to receive 4mm thumb screws through the deck.
