This gauge clips onto HO/OO track and tells you how high the mounting surface needs to be for the draft gear. (The draft gear is the small box that actually holds the Kadee coupling in place and allows it to pivot.). When mounting draft gear to your rolling stock it can be mounted over a surface, or under a surface depending on the rolling stock. This little fixture works either way and is very handy for determining if any shimming is required.
Note that the height gauge sold by Kadee tells you how high the coupling knuckle itself needs to be but that only works AFTER you have already mounted the coupling.
This item tells you how close to workable your proposed mounting surface actually is.
Note: This is particularly useful when converting British/European rolling stock which was never really designed for Kadee.
