Summary

I wanted to build a drag chain for my new laser engraver because the Ortur Master 2 has pretty bad cable management. Since I had a bunch of spare links from my Ender 3 I decided to start with a remix of this popular drag chain (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2920060).

The drag chain links and covers are all from the original files built by johnniewhiskey and I used a couple of his mounts as starting points when building the termination sections for this. Everything was built in Tinkercad.

To assemble, you'll need a far end x-axis mount, far end x-axis link, center x-axis link, center x-axis mount, center y-axis mount, and near y-axis mount. There are 2 styles of near y-axis mounts depending on the position of the homing limit switch. Aside from these 6 components, all links and covers are from the original thing.

In total I used 30 standard links and covers for the x-axis and 35 standard links and covers on the y-axis. To help alleviate some of the strain for the x-axis, I designed large link terminators for each end which are a bit stronger and can accommodate the standard link covers.

Although the larger links help relieve strain during use, I tend to store the laser head at the rear right of the engraving bed to fully extend the chains. To do this manually, I recommend unplugging your servo cables before pushing the head around your print area to prevent inducing current on your motherboard. It's probably fine, but better safe than sorry. As I get to know the engraver, I may alter the home position through firmware.

This mod required me to extend my cables. If you do not feel comfortable soldering or crimping in extension wires, these drag chains probably wont work for you. I extended the black laser module cable on the x-axis ~40mm and the servo motor cables on the y-axis ~50mm. So far I haven't had any issues with the cable extensions.
