Summary

Retort stands are useful! Chemistry labs require them (https://i.ytimg.com/vi/FcdX8obS98A/maxresdefault.jpg), some people use them for steeping coffee (https://i.pinimg.com/originals/ab/70/98/ab7098ea9709549b3eeb72145bfbbdc1.jpg), and others use a pair of them to hold printer filament (See danielkschneider's https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:28590). This was designed for those who don't want to spend $15-30 for one. I am a cheapskate, and I also wanted something that I could customize. The stands are usually limited by the length of rod on the stand. Usually, the rod is threaded, but this uses a M4 set-screw on a 3/8 inch (9.53 mm) diameter rod. These are cheap and common, but they are strong enough to support a lot of weight.

You will need:

1 X 3/8" OD round rod (any length, but typically 24")
1 X 3d printed base
1 X M4-0.7 screw (thumb screw, socket, etc. per user preference or availability)

If the base needs weighted down, there are plenty of ways to add weight. Securing it to a wood block, clamping it to the table, putting a sand-bag on it, and using fishing weights on the tray of the base are a few options.

Have fun!
