I recently acquired Mythwind and am really loving it, but I wasn't loving having to drag out and dig through two separate boxes to get at all of the extra pieces in the "main" inserts in each box every time I wanted to play solo. So I combined the boxes and created an insert to hold everything leftover in both boxes.
FAQ:
- Do I have to cut the boxes? Nope, but you might experience a little lid lift from the bottom panels being intact.
- Do I have to glue or tape them together? Nope, but I find it's better for stability. If you're not cutting out the bottom panel, you might have better luck with not adhering them and simply nesting them together.
- Then why did you...? I'm not afraid to cut into boxes, especially in games I know I'm going to keep for a very long time. Because the main box is so tight for space anyway, I knew every mm was going to count.
- What's that empty card spot for? That's for your discard stack - now you have a place to put all the things you're pulling out of the game as you play!
- There's a lot of wasted/extra space...? Yep! With the reprint coming out, I made this as modular as possible so that I could add in designated spaces for the new content. Also, there's sprite minis out there!
To combine the boxes:
- Cut out both bottom panels of the bottom boxes with a VERY SHARP craft knife.
- Insert the resulting surrounds into the opposite box tops so that the bottom of Expanded Horizons is in the top of the main box, and the bottom of the main box is in the Expanded Horizons lid.
- Marry the two to check for fit. You want NO gap between the two lids.
- Trim away excess paper if necessary around previous cuts.
- Adhere the surrounds to the lids and you now have a bigger box!
To print this insert:
Print one of everything, except the boxes that hold the event cards, adventure cards, and an extra slot for discards. You'll need two of those. I've marked the file name so it's obvious.
